The albums reviewed in this edition of Eclectic Discoveries are a carefully selected group of musical gems and some of the most impressive releases that have recently shown up on our radar.

Turkish-German singer and bağlama player Derya Yıldırım met French multi-instrumentalist Axel Oliveres (aka Graham Mushnik) at a Hamburg festival in 2014. Little did they know that their shared musical journey was just beginning. Now performing as part of the four-piece Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek, they craft a heady brew of psych-soul sounds with lyrics sung exclusively in Turkish. 2025's Yarın Yoksa was produced by Leon Michels for Michels' own Big Crown Records, and it features the effortlessly elegant, fan favorite single "Cool Hand."

I had the date circled in my mind for months. After listening to Yarın Yoksa, their Big Crown Records release from this past spring, produced by the versatile Leon Michels—the millennial answer to Rick Rubin—I knew I had to see them live. As soon as I heard they would be at The Chapel, I made sure to be there. Word on the street is that about 10 years ago, while participating in a community theater project, Derya Yıldırım met French musicians Graham Mushnik (keyboards) and Antonin Voyant (guitar and bass) from Catapulte Records and formed the band Grup Şimşek with Helen Wells, a drummer from Cape Town, joining in 2021.

The silky vocals of Derya Yıldırım flow over the atmospheric tunes like oil on water, while the music itself brings together catchy tunefulness with a cinematic sense of space. It is minimalist in places, not just in the sense of the haunting a cappella intro to "Misket," but in the way that musical phrases are consistently repeated and built into layers, washing over the listener in a series of sonic waves.

Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek have just released their fourth album. The Anadolu Pop sounds softer and more haunting than ever before. Derya Yıldırım has selected ten albums that have shaped her. The interest in Turkish pop from the 1970s and 1980s, which was revived a few years ago, continues unabated. Legendary protagonists of the Turkish scene like Moğollar or the cult singer Selda Bağcan are welcome guests on European concert stages. It is not only in Germany that the culture of the "guest workers," long ignored by the majority society, is slowly coming to the fore.

"Yarın Yoksa" bedeutet "Was, wenn es kein Morgen gibt?". Der Titel für ihr viertes Album fiel der Band erst ein, nachdem es eingespielt war. Wie so oft bei der Grup Şimşek passierte die Namensfindung kollektiv. Am Flughafen, nach ihrem Studiotermin in New York. Darum sucht man auch vergeblich nach einem Song oder einer Textzeile "Yarın Yoksa". Es sei eher eine Überschrift, erklärt die 30-jährige Musikerin, eine Fortführung ihrer beiden Vorgänger "Dost" 1 & 2, in denen die Band ihre Freundschaft zelebrierte.

Fuzzy, hypnotic beats, soulful saz-funk and emotive balladry mark Yıldırım's powerfully imaginative new music, produced by Leon Michels. Since the 1960s, Turkish groups have honed a distinct blend of Anatolian folk and psychedelia. Early pioneers Moğollar and Erkin Koray electrified the lute-like saz, while newer acts such as Baba Zula and Altın Gün have added synths, dub echo and heavy fuzz to the mix. German-Turkish singer Derya Yıldırım has meanwhile taken a downtempo approach since her 2019 debut album *Kar Yağar*, singing soaring vocals over hazy reverb to produce soulful saz-funk.

If your Turkish is rusty, you might miss the wordplay in the name "Derya Yıldırım and Grup Şimşek." Both "Yıldırım" and "Şimşek" mean lightning, and on their third full-length LP, *Yarın Yoksa*, Yıldırım and her Lightning Group just about catch it in a bottle. *Yarın Yoksa* reverberates with the pleasure and ease of a longtime lived-in collaboration, perhaps borne out of a serendipitous combination of elements. Yıldırım was raised in the Turkish quarter of Hamburg; drummer Helen Wells is South African, keys player Graham Mushnik and guitarist (and flutist) Antonin Voyant are both French.

Kein Morgen? Im Gegenteil, trotz seines Titels weist das mittlerweile dritte Album von Saz-Spielerin Derya Yıldırım und ihrer Grup Şimşek sehr wohl ins Morgen. Und zwar in ein besseres, als es das deutsche Pop-Einerlei sonst so bereit hält: psychedelische Anadolu-Grooves, schimmernde Harmonien und magische Melodien. Die Band hat für ihr drittes Album das erste Mal die Produktionszügel aus der Hand gegeben und arbeitete mit Clairo-Produzent Leon Michels zusammen. Und wagt sich neben Neuinterpretationen anatolischer Folksongs auch an Eigenkompositionen.

„Yarın Yoksa", das neue Album der Berliner Künstlerin Derya Yıldırım, heißt auf Deutsch „Wenn es kein Morgen gibt". Der Albumtitel klingt existenziell, die Musik der elf Songs, ihr sanft psychedelischer, irisierender Touch, überführt diese Dringlichkeit in luftige Arrangements. Gleich im Auftaktsong „Çiçek Açıyor" (Blühende Blume) heißt es in der zweiten Strophe „Kül Olorum, kor bakar / Parlarım, sönemem / Bana vebal, alınırım yar". Das Text-Ich verwandelt sich in Asche „wegen deines brennenden Blicks". Die Glut leuchtet trotzdem, sein Feuer kann nicht gelöscht werden, auch wenn der Blick des anderen „eine Bürde ist, der mich beleidigt".

Folk music, despite its popular portrayal here in the United Kingdom, incorporates so much more than a few boring old men strumming acoustic guitars. Turkey, for instance, boasts an incredibly rich and diverse history of Anatolian folk music, which has captivated listeners for centuries. One of the greatest aspects of the Anatolian folk sound is its adaptability, which became particularly evident back in the 1960s when artists began to combine it with the emerging sounds of psychedelic rock.

Derya Yıldırım is a revelation, an artist with the kind of (literal, figurative) voice that makes legends. She finds deep meaning in everything she does musically. Singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, Derya Yıldırım is no easy artist to pin down, and neither is *Yarın Yoksa*, the new release from her and Grup Şimşek, the ensemble she leads made up of keyboardist Graham Mushnik, guitarist and bassist Antonin Voyant, and drummer Helen Wells. With a title meaning "if there is no tomorrow," it's devoted to yesterdays and nows.

This week, Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek release their third full-length studio album, *Yarın Yoksa*, via Big Crown Records. The album's title translates to "If There Is No Tomorrow" and explores personal pain and collective resistance in equal measure. A central thread of loss, longing, and hope for change runs throughout. Vital themes for trying times. The lyrics, performed entirely in Turkish, are poetic, rich in symbolism and metaphor, and paired with shifting musical accompaniments that allow each track to stand on its own while never compromising the cohesiveness of the project.

About a decade ago, a group of musicians met by happenstance while working on a local theater project. Derya Yıldırım met bassist/guitarist Antonin Voyant and keyboardist Graham Mushnik, and it didn't take long for the trio to form a quartet with the addition of drummer Helen Wells. The newly formed group dubbed themselves Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek.

With roots in Turkey, Germany, France and South Africa, and their style traversing soul, folk and psychedelia and beyond, this thrilling band are refreshingly resistant to pigeonholes.

Musik für Kinder? Ehrlich gesagt: selten ein Garant für geschmackssichere Sounds. Eine Ausnahme, die Erwachsene fast noch lieber hören könnten als Kinder: das neue Album von Derya Yıldırım und Graham Mushnik. Yıldırım, in Berlin lebende Hamburgerin, die sonst mit ihrer Grup Şimşek anatolische Folklore und Psychedelia verbindet, vertont hier gemeinsam mit Mushnik türkische Wiegen- und Kinderlieder, Popsongs und Volkslieder neu. November 2022: Derya Yıldırım sitzt vor ihrem Laptop, die schwarzen Haare kurz und fedrig geschnitten, steckt sie in einer weißen Weste mit Stehkragen und sieht ein bisschen aus wie eine Superheldin aus der Zukunft. Im Hintergrund blitzen leere Wände, dazwischen liegen Plastikfolie und verstreute Umzugskartons. Erst am Vortag ist die Musikerin aus Hamburg in ihr neues WG-Zimmer in Berlin eingezogen. Viel Zeit zum Auspacken bleibt ihr dabei nicht. Denn in den kommenden Wochen steht die Tour zur Veröffentlichung ihres neuen Albums an, "Dost 2", das sie im Juni 2023 auf dem Elbjazz-Festival in Hamburg präsentiert.

Die Hamburger Musikerin Derya Yıldırım wuchs auf der Veddel auf. Heute spielt sie auf großen Bühnen – und wehrt sich dagegen, auf diese Geschichte reduziert zu werden. Seit Monaten vergeht für Derya Yıldırım keine Woche ohne Interview. Die 25-Jährige ist Lehramtsstudentin, allmählich aber auch länderübergreifender Radiostar.
